Low Voltage Electrical Systems
Low voltage systems are comprised of electrical equipment that uses 50 volts (V) of electricity or less. Common low voltages include 48 V, 24 V, and 12 V. Residential examples of low voltage systems include doorbells, garage door openers, home security sensors, thermostats, and landscape lighting.
There are two main electrical cables and equipment types: low and high voltage. Low-voltage cables and equipment are typically used for smaller electronic devices, such as phones and laptops. They are designed to carry a low current, which means they pose less of a risk of electrical shock.
The low-voltage wiring system uses small-gauge copper wires connected to low-voltage switches to switch on and off relays which in turn control the operation of lights and where desired, electrical receptacles, and other 120-Volt equipment in homes
